PHEV Service Repairs

Melbourne

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are becoming one of the most popular choices for Melbourne drivers who want the efficiency of an electric motor without giving up the range of a petrol engine. They’re practical, capable, and increasingly common on roads across Ringwood and the eastern suburbs — and they need servicing from someone who understands both sides of the drivetrain.

At PMA Auto Works, your local mechanics in Ringwood, we provide PHEV service and repair services from our car workshop in Ringwood, Melbourne, covering everything from routine maintenance to fault diagnostics across both the electric and combustion systems.

What Makes a PHEV Different to Service

A plug-in hybrid carries two powertrains in one vehicle — an electric motor powered by a rechargeable battery pack, and a conventional petrol or diesel engine. That combination gives you real-world flexibility, but it also means there’s more to look after than a standard EV or a regular petrol car.

Some components overlap with EV servicing — the high-voltage battery, regenerative braking system, and electric motor all need the same kind of attention. At the same time, the combustion engine still requires all the usual service items: oil changes, filters, spark plugs, coolant, belts, and more. Miss either side and you’re not getting the full picture of your vehicle’s condition.

Our technicians are comfortable working across both systems. We use professional diagnostic tools that communicate with PHEV-specific software and can read faults across the electric and combustion components simultaneously.

What's Included in a PHEV Service

A PHEV service at PMA Auto Works covers all the bases — electric and mechanical.

    engine-oil

    Engine oil and filter

The petrol or diesel engine still needs regular oil changes. In many PHEVs, the engine runs less frequently than in a conventional car, which can actually lead to moisture and fuel contamination in the oil over time. Staying on top of this is important.

    high-voltage

    High-voltage battery inspection

We assess the condition and capacity of the traction battery, including thermal management and charging behaviour. Catching early degradation saves money in the long run.

    brake

    Brake system service

Like full EVs, PHEVs use regenerative braking. The physical brakes are used less, which means they can corrode or seize without warning. We inspect and service the full braking system, not just what’s visible.

    battery

    12V auxiliary battery

PHEVs carry a small 12V battery that runs the vehicle’s electronics and accessories. It’s separate from the main traction battery and needs to be tested and replaced when necessary.

    coolant

    Coolant and thermal systems

Most PHEVs use liquid cooling for both the battery and the engine. We check all coolant levels, condition, and the integrity of the thermal management circuits.

    cabin

Air filters — cabin and engine

Both filters are checked and replaced as needed. The cabin filter is particularly relevant in PHEVs because the climate control system works harder when the vehicle is running in electric mode.

    damper

    Spark plugs and ignition system

The combustion engine in a PHEV often starts and stops more frequently than in a traditional car, which can affect ignition components over time.

    wheel-alignment

    Suspension and tyres

PHEVs are heavier vehicles. That extra weight affects tyre wear and puts more load on suspension components. We inspect and service both, and carry out wheel alignments that account for the vehicle’s actual load characteristics.

    web-settings

    Software diagnostics and fault codes

We scan all vehicle systems for fault codes, including hybrid-specific warnings that standard OBD tools won’t pick up.

    Logbook Servicing for PHEVs

Keeping up with your manufacturer’s logbook schedule is important for warranty compliance and resale value. We carry out logbook services for PHEVs using quality parts that meet or exceed manufacturer specifications. Your warranty remains intact, and your service history stays in order.

If your PHEV is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, you do not need to return to the dealership for logbook servicing. Australian consumer law gives you the right to have your vehicle serviced by a qualified independent mechanic, provided the correct parts and procedures are followed — which is exactly what we do.

    Roadworthy Certificates for PHEVs

We are licensed to carry out roadworthy inspections and issue Roadworthy Certificates (RWC) for plug-in hybrid vehicles in Victoria. A proper PHEV roadworthy covers both the conventional mechanical components and the hybrid-specific systems, and our team has the equipment and knowledge to inspect both correctly.
